Case scenario: At the breakdown, after a defensive tackle, you get both hands on the ball. Would you advocate trying to wrestle the ball back (jackle) and have complete control (at the risk of some major aggressive onslaughts) OR would you recommend attempting to speedily dislodge the ball (in any direction backwards) by identifying a weak area in the players grip (that is holding or placing the ball) and exploiting it?

Sam, in your view is it acceptable for a player to play outside the laws at the breakdown if he knows the referee is not inclined to penalize? I know the game is professional but does the need to win overide playing rugby in the spirit of the game, so to speak? I ask this cause it’s what most flankers say in interviews if they are perceived to have gotten away with multiple infringements at the breakdown.

In an era when size seems to be most things and coaching leaves little to chance, do you feel that the smaller, instinctive player of the past, such as Barry John and Gerald Davies, would flourish, or do you think their flair would be forfeited for a more structured game plan?
